CORE VALUES
Make sure your core values align. Take the time to research the career path of the mentor. Seek out someone who has walked or is walking the same path as you. The mentor is someone who will give you good credible advice. Seek out the person who has strong ethical values and is a respected professional in the industry. This person will add value to your experience because they can relate to your journey in many ways.
AVAILABILITY
I serve as a mentor to several aspiring Realtors. My sure sign of commitment (or lack thereof) is availability. Your mentor should not have to chase you down. You are seeking knowledge and guidance. Be available to receive it! The same holds true for the mentor. Don’t take on the role of a mentor if you are too busy.
Bottom line, a mentor and mentee should be in communication with one another on a regular basis. Set the frequency of communication with the mentor at the beginning of the relationship. Have an understanding up front of expectations. If schedules or life changes, reevaluate the relationship but never burn a bridge!
EXPERTISE
Be sure that the your mentor has experience and knowledge in the area you would like to master. The mentor should add value to the relationship. Identify the skill that you are seeking to improve before choosing a mentor and seek out the person who exemplifies that skill the most. The person you choose should be able to help you improve in those areas. Again, don’t pick a person because they are popular or make a lot of money or because they are popular. Remember this person should bring value to your experience.
